Learn to ice climb from The Scratch Pad owner Dustin Lyons.

Dustin started climbing ice in the late 90’s with legend Scott Adamson. He co-founded the Serac Mountaineering Club which operated from the late 90’s until about 2008. Through the club, Dustin taught many people ice climbing and mountaineering skills and led trips all over the country.

Dustin also co-founded the Wasatch Ice Festival which operated from about 2004-2008. The ice festival brought gear manufacturers and demo gear, along with top-tier athletes from around the country to Provo Canyon and allowed hundreds of people to learn the sport of ice climbing through the clinics and classes offered.

Dustin introduced ice climbing to The Homestead Resort in Midway Utah by building a 42’ man-made ice climbing tower that allowed guests of the resort & outside groups to learn ice climbing in a safe and comfortable environment.

Since then Dustin has since pursued many significant climbing goals from first ascents on big desert ice, to the high mountains of Alaska. Dustin knows Utah ice like the back of his hand, and has spent time pursuing ice across the US.

In 2021, Dustin co-founded The Scratch Pad, Utah’s only drytooling gym, and one of only a few facilities in the US where climbers can train on real ice tools. This led Dustin to start coaching a youth team to success with Landers Gaydosh winning his first gold medal in the UIAA Ice Climbing World Youth Championships in the U16 category only 4 months after starting training at The Scratch Pad. Dustin is also the director of this year’s UIAA Ice Climbing World Youth Championships being held for the first time in the US on Feb 7-9 in Ouray Colorado.

Dustin moved The Scratch Pad to Bountiful Utah where he continues to coach both a youth and adult team, with several members having successfully made the US Ice Climbing Team. After a tragic accident involving a close friend, Dustin has developed a passion for helping people stay safe in their ice climbing pursuits as well as training members of Utah’s SAR teams in ice climbing specific skills.

Through Dustin’s love of ice climbing, he has picked up Sponsors like Aniiu Gloves which has allowed him to teach at ice festivals across the country with people like Conrad Anker, and Matt Cornell. Dustin loves helping others learn and grow and hopes he can inspire others to fall in love with the sport of ice climbing safely.
