The Scratch Pad is the brain child of these two crazy people, Susan Sims, and Dustin Lyons. Back in 2019, Dustin and his trainer Jon Chase had a climbing wall built in the warehouse leased by his marketing company. The wall was part of Chase Movement, a movement efficiency gym ran by Chase. Dustin, being Dustin, bought a few drytooling and ice holds and started tinkering around on tools. But the wall didn't get much use over the last few years, as Chase Movement rarely used the wall for its program, and Dustin was too busy climbing outside to spend much time in the gym. Susan and Dustin have been friends and climbing partners for years now, and they recently climbed Denali together. As that amazing trip came to its climactic end, they both were looking for what was next. Both Susan and Dustin have a passion for ice and mixed climbing and they both have a few big objectives they wanted to train for. Susan wanted a bigger training facility than the home wall in her backyard, and had recently ordered a bunch of fancy Russian drytool holds. "We should train for climbing this winter" one of them said. "I have a bunch of holds", said Susan. "I have a wall", Dustin replied. What started as just an idea for a couple friends to train for the winter climbing season has evolved into The Scratch Pad, Utah's first and only dedicated drytooling gym. With the excitement and support from the community, and with how much the sport is growing, it only makes sense. We would be stoked to have you join us.
Susan is one of the most stoked climbers out there. She started climbing several years ago and has progressed tremendously in a short time. Even though Susan has climbed some of the biggest mountains around including Denali and Mont Blanc she loves ice and mixed climbing as well as drytooling, and has really enjoyed cutting her teeth on the wonderful ice and choss of Provo Canyon Utah.
Some of Susan's favorite times on ice have been when she climbed the elusive "Angel of Fear" in Santaquin Canyon Utah, and of course climbing big wall ice in the deserts of Zion.
Susan loves sharing what she has learned with others and is a great teacher and coach. Susan is full of spunk and energy and brings so many great things to The Scratch Pad.

Dustin started climbing back in the mid 90's (yeah he's that old), and has loved it ever since. He started climbing Ice in Utah's Provo Canyon back when we used leashes and straight shaft tools. Dustin enjoys climbing high mountains like Rainier, The Grand Teton, and Denali, but his true climbing love is technical ice and mixed climbing.
Dustin has really enjoyed ramping up his climbing ability the last few years and being able to get on some of the harder climbs Utah has to offer such as an ascent of "FrankenChrist" In Maple Canyon, and "Divine Intervention" in Zion, both WI6.
Dustin enjoys teaching and sharing his knowledge and experience with others and seeing them progress and enjoy the wild places this world has to offer. Dustin also eats his fair share of celery.
