Please Help Us Expand

Please Help Us Expand

Your contribution will help us to expand the gym with a new kick in bouldering area approximately 900sq feet. This would effectively about double our climbing surface and allow us to have kick in capability which will be better training for competition climbing, and really help our Youth Team as well as the community.

The Scratch Pad Drytooling Gym in Orem, Utah is growing and we need your help!

We opened in October and the response from climbers and the community is tremendous--people LOVE drytooling in our gym! Since opening, we have been constrained by having to share our space with a traditional gym. However, that gym relocated so they could expand, and now SO CAN WE! We've started by increasing the hours we are open, and now we would like to expand our climbing space. We want to build a KICK-IN BOULDERING AREA.

This space would allow for the use of competition boots with frontpoints so climbers can kick into the plywood walls like they do in ice climbing and in competitions. The bouldering area will also have steep-angled walls and hanging volumes close to the ground to allow for individuals to climb and train hard on their own, and for anyone to play around on dynamic holds that are only accessible on harder routes on our current roped walls. Our plan is to have a 10-foot-tall free-standing steel-framed structure with a plywood climbing surface and traditional 12" thick pad in the landing zone. We have broken down costs for construction below to arrive at our estimate:

  • Lumber $850
  • Hardware & fasteners $150
  • 3/4" and 1/2" plywood panels $3300
  • T-nuts $550
  • Industry standard of 12" flooring of 10" open-cell with a 2" closed cell carpet bonded foam $18,000
  • Steel framing $6,000
  • Bolts & drytool-specific climbing holds $2500+

*all costs are rounded up to the nearest $50/$100

We want to build this as soon as possible, but we want to give the community a chance to help grow the sport and be a part of the future of indoor drytooling and competition ice climbing in the U.S., including encouraging youth to train and compete. If you love ice climbing, drytooling, climbing, or just want to help support this passion we all share, please contribute!

We are grateful for the opportunity to build a gym to give not only climbers, but even people who have never picked up a tool the chance to experience how fun this is. Please share and let's get scratchin'!!!
